Point Reyes: whales, wildflowers, and three different Point Reyes

Point Reyes is the only place on the NorCal coast where, in April, you can watch gray whales from one bluff and kneel in goldfields on the next. It's also the most photographed peninsula in the region, which means it's crowded, which means knowing where to go matters more than knowing when.

Three different Point Reyes, pick one

Most people drive in thinking "Point Reyes" is a place. It's three very different places, and trying to do all three in a day is how weekends get ruined.

1. Chimney Rock and the Lighthouse (outer peninsula)

The furthest-out tip. 45 minutes from the park entrance even in no traffic, and the road closes for shuttles most weekends March-May.

2. Tomales Point (north peninsula)

Wildlife sanctuary on the narrow northern finger. Tule elk herd lives here, about 450 animals.

3. Limantour, Bear Valley, the main park (inland)

The family-friendly middle.

Gray whale watching, practical version

Gray whales pass Point Reyes heading north from late February through early May. The later in the window, the closer to shore they are, because mothers with new calves hug the coast to avoid orcas. Peak viewing from shore is mid-March through mid-April. A good morning at Chimney Rock (calm sea, good light) will show 5 to 15 whales spouting in an hour.

Where to stay

Point Reyes Station (the town) and Inverness both have B&Bs and small inns. Book 4-6 weeks out for weekends in April and May. Camping at Coast or Wildcat is walk-in only; reserve well in advance.

Food stops worth it

What to skip

Stinson Beach parking on any weekend April-October unless you are there before 10 a.m. It's not worth circling. Go to Limantour instead.
